Discover ideas of a future world in design creations ranging from early science fiction film sets to virtual spaces and examine pioneering objects from the Vitra Design Museum collection to find out how technological innovation and utopian concepts find their way into our everyday environment. The annual themed presentation in the Vitra Schaudepot spotlights visions of a future world manifested in design creations ranging from early science fiction film sets to the design of virtual spaces. The dialogue tour highlights pioneering objects from the Vitra Design Museum collection and examines how technological innovations and utopian concepts found their way into our everyday environment, influencing and shaping the world we live in. We want to show that there are many different factors that influence the way we live at home and how we furnish our homes. There are pioneering architects and designers that lead the way or were the first to recognize new social or technological currents.

In the years since beginning his practice, the starchitect has been recognized time and time again for his innovative and distinct approach to design. In 2016, he was even honored with Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. A man with seemingly no limits, there is no bad time to celebrate Gehry’s oeuvre. The Vitra Design Museum regularly provides loans to other museums and galleries, including renowned partners as the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The Vitra Design Museum was founded in 1989 by the Vitra company and Rolf Fehlbaum, now Chairman Emeritus. Originally conceived for the purpose of displaying a private furniture collection, the museum initially produced smaller exclusive exhibitions, such as on Erich Dieckmann or the then little-known Ron Arad.

The museum points to a renewed discussion about how designers can place their work into a larger context in order to effect social change. And indeed, the Bauhaus’s then-revolutionary championing of interdisciplinary work and design as a way of life, is now fundamental in contemporary design practice. In the Vitra exhibit, curator Jolanthe Kugler cites today’s examples, including automotive design at Mercedes-Benz and product innovation at Muji. In a final nod to the current zeitgeist, the exhibit’s subtitle serves as an invitation for visitors to share their experiences at the show as well as their own views on design, ensuring that the Bauhaus’s principles continue to spread. The preservation and conservation of the objects in the Vitra Design Museum collection and archive is overseen by the museum’s own conservation workshop. A special focus of this work is devoted to the issues and problems posed by the aging of plastic materials.

Architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky’s 1926 Frankfurt Kitchen, for example, crystallized a moment when the logic of an efficient, modern factory floor infiltrated the home. A model home displayed at the American National Exhibition in Moscow in 1959, meanwhile, became a proxy for soft power after Vice President Richard Nixon got into an impromptu debate with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev about the nature of domestic work. The architect Balkrishna Doshi is one of the foremost pioneers of modern architecture in his home country. Jolanthe Kugler, curator at the Vitra Design Museum, talked with the 91-year-old architect about the melding of Indian traditions and Western modernism in his buildings, about his revolutionary social housing concepts and his formative years with Le Corbusier in the 1950s.

What can designers working today and facing challenges like climate change or urban housing shortages learn from some of the interiors in this exhibition, and the ideas that shaped them? A leading protagonist of the critical design movement, Superflux addresses pressing social issues by designing speculative, fictitious scenarios of the future. Cofounder Anab Jain talks with Amelie Klein, curator of exhibition »Hello, Robot. Design between Human and Machine«, about what she would like to see in robots and her hopes for the future. Dutch Designer Marjan van Aubel is one of the most renowned designers of recent years.

The museum library and document archive are available to researchers upon request. The museum conceives its exhibitions for touring, and they are shown at venues around the world. Luis Barragán (1902–1988) is widely regarded as the most important Mexican architect of the twentieth century. Since 1996, the architect’s professional estate has been in the care of the Barragan Foundation, located in Birsfelden, near Basel in Switzerland. Over the past two decades, a small team of researchers under the leadership of architectural historian Federica Zanco has systematically evaluated and catalogued the archival documents.

At the Vitra Schaudepot, key pieces from the museum collection are on display as well as temporary exhibitions. The museum's collection, focusing on furniture and interior design, is centered on the bequest of U.S. designers Charles and Ray Eames, as well as numerous works of designers such as George Nelson, Alvar Aalto, Verner Panton, Dieter Rams, Jean Prouvé, Richard Hutten and Michael Thonet. It is one of the world's largest collections of modern furniture design, including pieces representative of all major periods and styles from the beginning of the nineteenth century onwards.

As part of a newly established partnership between the Barragan Foundation and the Vitra Design Museum, this material has moved to new premises on the Vitra Campus. This includes a state-of-the-art repository for the documents, a study room for visiting researchers, and the Barragán Gallery, a thematic exhibition space. The gallery show presents drawings, photographs and other material from the Barragán Archive, together with biographical details and an illustrated chronology of modern architecture in Mexico. This ensemble of documents and supplementary information illuminates Barragán’s life and work in a larger context. In the main museum building by Frank Gehry, two major temporary exhibitions are presented each year. Smaller, more experimental projects are shown in the Vitra Design Museum Gallery.
